Contours from "Compute geometric features"

Hi,

Firstly, thank you for the great work in providing and updating this awesome software.

I am just playing with the new Compute Geometric Features tool, and was wondering if there is any way to output, or generate polylines based on the results?

IE, I am looking for an edge/contour polyline/spline detection or generating approach.

So, for any corners (say for example the corner of a building's window) an averaged line is drawn.

I hope that makes sense?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Hum, there's no such tool (yet)!

Hi Daniel, thanks for the reply.

Is this something that could be on the road-map potentially?

What i managed to do quite successfully was use the geometric features tool to split out different vertical and horizontal planes, along with curvature and a few others, using this data split into separate clouds, I would then like to either get a curve that just follows the boundary of each "plane" or, using the curvature option which pretty much defines the edges anyway, use this data to get a line through the average of the remaining cloud points.

I think it could be quite a handy tool if for example you need to scan a room or object and need to make a quick low resolution CAD model of the point-cloud based on corner angles or planes etc.

Hope this might be possible and not too difficult to do!

Thanks again for your dedication to this awesome set of tools!

Well, frankly this is a difficult task!

I clearly understand the need, but I doubt anyone in the team has time/money to undertake such a work. As always, the ideal option would be to find a motivated developer that could actually do this work (PhD student, etc.).

Yep, quite understand - easy to have ideas, not always so easy to implement them! Thanks again!

Hi Daniel,
I have no idea regarding programming, so disregard this if it is ridiculous.
But I just read an article about this.
Could their algorithm be used in CloudCompare?

It's clearly not straightforward, but it's not impossible for someone motivated and with some good algorithm/programming skills (ideally that would have to be implemented in a plugin ;)
