[SURVEY] For which applications do you use CloudCompare?

Everything is in the title:
"Why do you use CC?"

I use CC for:
-Analysis of Terrestrial Laser Scans for:
- archaeology and cultural heritage
- deformation analysis of rocks and cliffs
-Creation of visuals and images

What about you??

It will certainly help improving CC!!

Hi,

I recently discovered CC by way of PCL. I'm with a research team using Cloud Compare to work on data analysis for an ecology project. We are comparing point clouds of trees generated from TLS scans versus point clouds of trees generated from computer vision software.

I'm using CC for Landslide monitoring projects. I have used the software in my Master thesis. And I'll use also for PhD.

In our team (geosciences, hydrology), we use cloudcompare for pretty muche everything but registration that is done in commercial softwares (Cyclone, Faro Scene).

Our use is:
. Visualization of terrestrial lidar, SFM, and airborne lidar
. Processing in the context of topographic change monitoring with qM3C2 and segmentation tools (cliff erosion, bank erosion, sedimentation/erosion in rivers, rock deformation).
. Quality assessment of various datasets with qM3C2 and histogram displays
. Classification with qCANUPO and combination of other things (orientation, intensity,....) for applications such as vegetation/ground detection, grain/boulder detection and even power lines !
. Processing in the context of vegetation analysis with qCANUPO (volume calculation, segmentation).
. ROI based 3D analysis based on deviating the use of some tools away from their original destination (e.g. C2C comparison)
. Creation of CHM (canopy height models with various tricks directly on point clouds)
. Creation of DEM (but extremely rarely)
. Creating illustrations and figures for scientific articles and presentation.
. Transferring and archiving data in .bin format
...and many other things that I don't remember

Other people in our university use it for archeology

Now that qCanupo and qM3C2 are implemented as plugin, we're not using anything else (except matlab for advanced calculation on small point clouds once they have been segmented).
It's just an outstanding software...the only limitation that we will face in the future is the capacity to handle very large ALS datasets ( > 1 billion points). For now, we have just scaled our hardware to match the point cloud size.,...
