LAZ file size

Post by kachlica »

What is the maximum size of LAZ file that CC can "swallow". I get 10 GB LAZ file and CC always crashes by import. Workstation: CPU: Intel Xeon CPU E5-2620 v2@2,10Ghz, RAM 120 G, CC 2.8.0 Beta

10 Gb LAZ?! How many points are there inside?

You can't go above 1 billion points I guess.

Dont know exactly , but resolution is pretty high (40 points per m/2 before ground classification). I will probably have to divide the area in GIS before importing into CC. Whole data are in seperated tiles put together in Global Mapper. So I will generate at least 4-5 LAZ files instead of one big one :)

The maximum points in LAZ 1.0 - 1.3 is 2^32 - 1 (4.2+ billion). LAS/LAZ 1.4 supports 2^64 -1, but liblas that ClouldCompare uses doesn't support it. I can try to hook PDAL into CloudCompare if I get some time and that supports LAS 1.4.

If you're crashing on 1 billion points, you're probably having memory/arrangement issues within CloudCompare because it's not a LAS limitation.
