Introducing FriendUP - a new OS with a VR interface in development

Post by hogne.titlestad »

Hi there!

We at FriendUP have created an open source OS for the cloud.

We are really interested in attracting developers in point cloud and VR based applications to our platform. We were wondering if there was any interest in the CloudCompare community.

We are aware that it is the leading piece of software in its space in terms of open platform.

Our VR interface is still in it's infancy, but if you read a bit up on our technology and take a look at what we're doing, I'm sure that you'll see the power in being able to converge between the VR and desktop interfaces at the same time. Applications that can be used in both VR, mobile and desktop at the same time across user accounts and user sessions open up many new opportunities. Anyone with a browser can use Friend, as it is browser based. For VR we're using Web VR on top of Three.js.

We are working on a point cloud project related to the Hafrsfjord. This is historically one of the most important fjords in Norway, and had a population for over 10.000 years. With CloudCompare ported to Friend, researchers could deploy it as a tool to find interesting items in the scanned sediments. If interested, I will elaborate more on the Hafrsfjord project. We believe it is a great use case of our technology.

Anyway, thank you from Norway!

Hogne

Hi,

Sorry for the delay of my answer.

Of course your project seems very nice and interesting. However I just don't know how hard it would be to port a C++/Qt/OpenGL application such as CloudCompare to your OS. And how we will maintain the two branches.

Do you have any example of such applications that would have already been ported?
